Short for "Quick Response", QR codes were invented in 1994 in Japan so as to be able track auto parts thru the manufacturing process. QR codes have been overwhelmingly popular in Japan for nearly a decade as a way to quickly connect. Today, the popularity of smartphones has given birth to a new life for QR codes in the U.S. They have become virtual hyperlinks from the physical to the digital world. The black and white maze-like symbol can now be scanned using a smartphone's camera with a simple app. Once the code is brought into focus by the camera, the app immediately extracts the link and delivers you to the destination. This is much faster than typing the web address manually.

    The environment

Many of the early mainstream QR code campaigns weren't considering the mobile user experience, often leading scanners to non-mobile web pages. Even though there are so many possibilities to deliver mobile value, the opportunity was being misplayed. We saw the need for a solution.
